Predators Girls 6th Grade
Springfield AYBT June 14-15, 2008The first game of the summer was against a CHBC team that is 2 years older than our girls. With a balanced scoring attack the girls played them to a tie at the end of regulation. The overtime was a game of free throws. The Predators shot 2 of 4, and CHBC hit 4 of 4. This was a tough loss but the challenge of playing an older team was good for the girls competively.
Our second game of the weekend was against the always tough Hot Dawgs, a 7th grade team. Though the Predators trailed for a good portion of the game, the defensive intensity and offensive execution led to a 24-20 victory.
In the third game, Mel Bremhorst scored 10 points and Pie Wilson added eight in the victory over the Future Lady Raiders. Everyone played well and we had a chance to run a variety of offenses throughout the game. This was a great early season opportunity to try some new things.
Game 4 was another game against a second CHBC high school team. Mel scored 11 points and Grace Settles added 7 but it was not enough to overcome the height advantage or the nine point deficit. Another good game for the team to be able to see some areas where some improvement can be made.
Our fifth game of the weekend was a battle with the St. Theresa Dawgs. Michaela Perry took the assignment to guard their top scorer and limited her to just 6 points. All the girls played tough defense throughout the game. Mel and Stephanie Menezes worked together to double team the post and slow down the Dawgs’ tallest girl. Pie scored 12 and Mel had 9 to get the 34-31 hard fought victory.
Monmouth AYBT June 28-29, 2008Game one was a convincing win over a year older Streaks on Fire Team. It was another balanced scoring game with Mel Bremhorst, Grace Settles, Nikki Hogan, and Pie Wilson scoring 8 points each. Gabby Morgan added 7, Michaela Perry with 6, Stephanie Menezes with 5, and Anika Webster added 4 points.
Our second game of the weekend was a 36-15 win over the Future Lady Knights. Gabby led the scoring attack with 8 points and 5 rebounds. Anika and Mel each had 5 rebounds as well. Michaela had 5 steals. Nice all around team effort.
Game 3 was a 12 point victory over the Hot Shots. The Predators played the Hot Shots even for the first half and then turned in a very strong offensive performance in the second half. The Predators scored 20 points in the half by changing offenses and spreading out against their zone. This led to the break-through in scoring.
Game 4 was a hard fought game against the Pride. The game could have gone either way but we ended up losing by 2. We missed a lot of shots and a lot of free throw opportunities. Any improvement in those areas and we would have won.
Game 5 was another close game, a 27-24 loss to PGSL 7th. Though we were outsized we played tough all the way to the end. Michaela Perry led us in scoring with 7 points, added 4 steals and chased the PGSL top offensive threat all over the court. We played as a team and that kept the game close. Our shooting was not as good as usual.
Bloomington AYBT July 5-6, 2008Quad Cities Select was our first opponent. We generally play older teams, but seldom do we play teams with this much of a height advantage. Mel squared off with QC Select’s 6’3” Center. We moved the ball fairly well against their zone, but we had a tough time shooting over their height advantage. Steph and Anika Webster teamed up for some nice passes through the zone for scores. In the end their shots fell and ours did not. Good work against a tough zone and a tough team.
Game 2 was a rematch against the Pride. The Predators got the win this time. We shot better making 15 shots and shooting 8 for 14 from the free throw line. A nice victory.
Next was another rematch, this time with the Hot Dawgs. A low scoring game and a defensive battle for the entire game. We had a low field goal percentage and missed a number of free throws. These factors led to a 14-11 loss.
Game 4 was a rematch with the Future Lady Knights. We shot just under 50% from the field and 75% from the line. Nice defensive and offensive effort from all of the girls.
Our final game of the weekend was a 35-13 victory over the Xplosion. Gabby Morgan and Steph worked the pick and roll to get opportunities that led us to a second half lead. Gabby led the team with 10 points. As a team we were aggressive on offense and raised the level of intensity on defense.
Decatur AYBT 7 12-13, 2008The Predators went undefeated this weekend.
Game 1 – a 44-21 victory over the St. Theresa Dawgs. Our defense was especially intense. The offense was clicking as well. Nikki Hogan led the Predators in scoring with 11 points. She added shots from inside and out. Pie and D.W. Wilson each added 10 points to ensure the victory.
Game 2 was a hard fought victory over the Hoop Gals, with the Predators prevailing 45-31. Mel led the team in scoring with 15. Nikki added 12 points. All eight girls played hard and contributed to the 40 minute effort.
The game 3 opponent was the solid C-U Elite team. The Predators move the ball against their zone very well. We tried some new things and they worked. This Predators team adjusts well in games, both offensively and defensively.
Our Sunday games started with a 10 point victory over the tough Ladies of Check Game team. We took a lot of shots and our percentage was not very high. This was a point of concern because the Check Game team was overall quite a bit taller. We also missed a number of free throws. However our defense rose to the occasion. Our full court pressure created some opportunities for us. On offense we attacked the rim.
The final game of the weekend was a 40-15 win over the Angels. Our shots fell as we shot 50 % from the field. Mel scored 13 points and Michaela had 4 steals. Gabby Morgan added 7 points and a couple of rebounds and a couple of steals. A great finish to a nice weekend.
AYBT Nationals in Bloomington July 20-23, 2008Game 1 was a win over the Mt. Zion Fusion. The Predators won a close game with the final score of 23-18. Stephanie Menezes led the team in scoring with 9 points and Mel Bremhorst pulled down 6 rebounds.
Game 2-The Predators earned a 35-15 victory over the Orange Krush. Nikki Hogan was the leading scorer with 8 points. Anika Webster’s 5 rebounds were the most for the Predators. The defensive intensity was so high that the team pressed for only a few possessions. The Predators used their variety of offenses throughout the game.
Day two- The Predators faced a full strength PGSL 7th Grade Team. Anika Webster was the Predators leading scorer. We ran some inbounds plays to near perfection. Those were some positives in a tough 38-25 loss.
Our second game of the day was a rematch with the Xplosion. The Predators played well in most of the game. Pie Wilson was the leading scorer with 8 points. The Predators built a 10 point lead but turnovers cost us the lead and the Xplosion won on a last second shot and a free throw.
Day three’s first game was a rematch with the Ladies of Check Game. The Predators won 29-22. Mel led the team in scoring with 8 points. Michaela Perry had a nice game with 4 rebounds and a steal. Grace Settles grabbed 5 rebounds. Gabby Morgan pulled in 4 rebounds.
Our last game in pool play was another game against the St. Theresa Dawgs. The Predators played pretty well, putting full court pressure on the entire game. However we missed some shots and some free throws. The Predators lost on a last second three point shot from the side that clipped the backboard and went in.
On Wednesday the Predators played the Xplosion for the first game of the single elimination tournament. With some new offensive sets put in place, the Predators won 34-16. The offense was very effective. The girls moved the ball to the open man and got to the rim quite a bit. Mel Bremhorst let the team with 14 points. The entire team was effective on offense. The defense was particularly intense creating numerous turnovers.
The Championship game matched the Hoop Gals against the Predators. With a tough defensive effort, the Predators played the Hoop Gals to a tie at the end of regulation. The Predators had the chance to win the game in overtime, yet lost on a last second shot. The Predators finished the Nationals Tournament as the Runner-up in the 6th Grade Highly Skilled Division.
